Whitianga is a great place to base yourself while you visit the Coromandel Peninsula.
Here are just some of favourite activities:
Hot Water Beach
Hot Water Beach is a beach on Mercury Bay on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand, approximately 12 kilometres south east of Whitianga. Naturally heated mineral water bubbles up from deep within the earth to emerge through golden sand at the appropriately named Hot Water Beach.
Near the rocks at the southern end of the beach you can dig your own spa pool in the sand. Dig up to two hours either side of low tide – that’s when the tide is low enough to expose the area of sand with hot water underneath.
Stunning views of the Coromandel coast guide you to the dramatic cliffs and iconic rock archway of Cathedral Cove, it is located at Hahei, which is just 10 minutes drive from Hot Water Beach.
The 309 Road
The 309 Road is a gravel road with spectacular views that takes you from one side of the peninsula to the other. There are a number of attractions along the way, including the Kauri Grove, The Waterworks and Castle Rock.
Mercury bay is a very popular spot for recreational fishing, choose from the many professional charter boats that are based in Whitianga and for those who want to just take in the sites our beautiful coast has to offer we have:
Glass Bottom Boat Cruises, Ocean Leopard Tours & Seacave Adventures.
